Manuscript Submission Rituals

New envelopes $3.99
Stamps $1.26
Gas for library trip to do publisher research $1.00
Phone charges for reading my carefully crafted cover letter to my mother $.75
Lost income from the subbing job I turned down today $75.00

The smell of four pages of a freshly-printed-worked-hard-on-critique-grouped-rewritten-read-to-husband-children-mother-mailman-rewritten-clean-wrinkle-free-copy-of-my-about-to-be-submitted-picture-book-manuscript.

Priceless.

Of course, rejection is a definite possibility but, at the moment, anything is possible and even if my work is turned down I get to submit somewhere else and go through this lovely, hopeful ritual all over again.
