Quiet Corners

I've subbed in Kindergarten this week for a friend dealing with family illness. Yesterday I sat with twenty-one students in the "Quiet Corner," and observed that some still had big construction paper apples pinned on with bus numbers on them. This reminded me of a recent post when I reminisced about my own son's construction paper apple days. In fact, he had the same teacher I am now subbing for.

Then, as we studied the calendar, talking about what month it is, what day it is, how many days we've been in school etc, another realization hit me. Seven years ago yesterday, my son was most likely sitting in this very quiet corner when the towers were hit. I was at home, walking on my treadmill while watching the Today Show. My daughter was at pre-school and I was enjoying two and half hours of Time To Myself.

None of these kids were even born, I thought. And we've been fighting a war for the entire time they've been alive. How time flies.
