The cavernous vortex of clutter and gloom, also known as my basement storage, is in the process of being decluttered. I started Monday and have since hauled ten garbage bags to the dump, eight garbage bags to goodwill, and set aside at least two vanloads of "stuff" for our church's upcoming garage sale.
I'm still not done. I have approximately fifteen more banker sized boxes to go through, not to mention the twenty banker boxes of my husband's and my books to sort (mostly my husband's books, I tend to use the library). But! A whole wall is bare. A built-in wall to ceiling shelving unit is completely cleared--not to be refilled. The room is beginning to look more. . .empty. The really exciting thing is, for once, I now know where everything is. I know what we have, and where to find it. Yay!
And I found my copy of Christina Katerina and the Box, by Patricia Gauch. She is speaking at the conference I'm going to on the fourteenth and now I can have her sign my beloved picture book. Remember Weekly Reader Book Clubs? Do they still have that? I remember being so excited to get my books in the mail.
It's true I can still barely walk through the finished part of my basement. It's true I can still barely walk through the storage room itself. But I'm seeing a light at the end of the tunnel. . . .

If I stored something in my basement that I actually wanted to find (like the book by P.G.), I'd be more motivated to follow your example and clean it up.
